What to do in the event of an accident.

Carry this check list in the vehicle with you as a reminder should you be involved in an accident

• Make the accident scene as safe as possible and stay calm
• Switch off the vehicle
• Turn on your hazard lights and erect a reflective triangle sign if you have one
• Notify the police if there are injuries or property damage
• Keep everyone off the road and away from the accident
• Do not make any rash decisions or admit liability
• Exchange names, addresses, registration numbers and insurance company details with the other party. Obtain contact details of any witnesses, and the incident reference number from the police should they attend the accident
• Do not, in any circumstances drive your vehicle if it is unroadworthy
• Get the contact details of the towing firm if your vehicle is towed and give them your insurance company details

What to do next

• Lodge a claim with your Insurance Company (repairs cannot start on your vehicle until the claim has been accepted by your Insurance Company and a claim number has been allocated)
• Supply your insurance company with all the details regarding the accident including the other party’s details, witness details and the police incident number if applicable.
• Bring your vehicle into Gary A. Smith, 384 Tuam St, Christchurch if it is still roadworthy. If it needs to be towed advise your insurance company or tow truck driver that you want your vehicle to be repaired at Gary A. Smith and have the vehicle delivered to our secure premises. Our assessors will then evaluate the damage to your vehicle.
• Gary A. Smith will give you an estimate of how long the repairs will take once they have carried out their assessment. They will then organise you a loan car and book your vehicle in for repairs.
